Festive Tree Decoration

A couple weeks ago I was shopping for Christmas decorations with my sister. Among the ornaments, garlands, and tinsel, we found sewn Christmas trees! These trees were very similar to the ones in this post. It turns out that they're actually pretty easy to make and don't require much fabric. If you wanted, they could even be made fancier with ribbon bows, stars, or jingle bell charms.

For this project, I made my own template using a printed out silhouette of a pine tree and tracing it on a piece of cardboard. If you don't have cardboard at the moment, a paper cutout would work.

Materials:

  • About 1/2 a yard of fabric (amount needed may vary based on size of tree template)

  • Cardboard or sturdy paper for tree template

  • Fabric-friendly marker

  • Poly-fil or other stuffing material

  • Basic sewing supplies (scissors, thread, etc.)

Instructions:

Make your tree template if you haven't already. I printed a tree silhouette, then traced it on cardboard and cut it out.

Use your tree template and fabric-friendly marker to trace 4 trees onto your fabric. Make sure the fabric is laying flat and has no wrinkles where you plan on tracing.

Cut out the tree pieces. Go slowly to make sure you cut as close to the line as possible.

Place one tree piece against another tree piece, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other (wrong sides out).

Sew around the edge of the sandwiched trees, but leave a sizeable gap at the bottom for stuffing.

Place the remaining two tree pieces together (the same way, right sides facing inward). Sew the edges, leaving the gap at the bottom.

Flip each tree piece right-side out. Place the two tree pieces against each other, making sure everything is lined up nicely, and sew a line right down the middle of the tree.

Stuff each of the four sections of your tree with the Poly-fil, as firm or as soft as you would like. Once all four sections have been stuffed, use a needle and thread to stitch up the holes in the bottom of the tree.

After you've finished stitching up the bottom, the tree is done! This project is so quick and easy you'll want to make an entire forest of trees before Christmas - I know I want to!
