These turned out so cute and are so quick to make too! I've been going through my Pinterest board looking for fall inspiration to sew or crochet (can't believe it's September), and I found these adorable potholders. I've actually had these specific potholders saved on my Pinterest board for over a year, but haven't actually gone ahead and made them until now! They were super easy and took less than an hour to make. I'm so excited to use these ones, for decor and as potholders!

Materials:

  • Cotton fabrics for front and back of potholder

  • Batting

  • Bias tape (double fold) and rick rack (for the lattice and trim)

Instructions:

Trace a circle about the size you want your potholder to be. For the small size, trace a circle with a 7 inch diameter. For the bigger size, trace a circle with a 9 inch diameter. You could also go with your own sizing. Once you have your front side fabric, back side fabric, and batting traced, cut the circles out.

You'll need 8 cut pieces of bias tape (about 9 inches each, or more if your circle is bigger). Stitch up the side of each piece of bias tape so it doesn't unfold. Arrange the pieces of bias tape in a lattice pattern (over, under, alternating) over top your top fabric piece. Place your bottom fabric piece over top of the lattice (right side down), then place the batting on top of that, creating a sandwich. Please see the picture below for more detail.

Pin or clip the layers securely together. Sew around the outside of the circle, with about 1/4 inch seam allowance. Don't sew all the way around!!! You'll want to leave about a 3 inch gap. Don't forget to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the hole.

Turn the pie inside out (make sure the lattice is on the right side- if it's not, you can flip it). Tuck the hole in and stitch closed. Sew the rick rack on the outside edge of the pie potholder (tuck in the raw ends to the best of your ability).

It's done! You've officially made a pie potholder! I'm sure if you wanted to add a loop at the top to hang it you could, just sew that into the sandwich.
