Patchwork Table Runner

Looking back at my posts over the years, I'm surprised I haven't sewn a table runner for the blog. I have a cute fall-themed table runner (thrifted!) that I put out every fall, and I have wanted another one for a while. Table runners are nice because they aren't as big as table cloths and can look really good with matching placemats. I also looked at this project as a way to use some more of my fabric scraps (I have so many).

Whether you have a lot of fabric scraps leftover from sewing, or you are looking for an easy way to spruce up your dining table, this is a great project to learn. If you don't have fabric scraps, you can cut a piece of whole fabric the same size as the bottom piece of fabric for the runner.

Materials:

• Fabric

  • Fabric scraps sewn together until size is about 68 inches long x 15 inches wide OR whole piece of fabric cut to 68 inches long x 15 inches wide (for top side of runner)

  • Whole fabric piece cut to 68 inches long x 15 inches wide (for bottom side of runner)

    *Length of runner can be changed depending on your table size. My table is about 66 x 42 inches.

• 166 inch piece of double-sided bias tape (I needed two packs of bias tape for this)

• Clothes iron

• Basic sewing supplies (machine or needle, thread, pins, scissors, etc.)

Instructions:

If you haven't already cut out your fabric pieces, cut them out now (refer to materials list for sizes). Place the top and bottom pieces of the table runner against each other (right sides facing outward, wrong sides in). Pin in place, then slowly quilt the two layers together. I just did a simple criss cross pattern (the quilting technique isn't the main focus here, it's the patchwork on top).

Once has been stitched in place, make sure all of your pins have been removed (if you used them). Line up bias tape to the raw edges of the table runner and secure in place with pins. Sew on the bias tape to finish the edges.
