Ever since I saw this idea on Pinterest years ago, I've been wanting to make one of these carriers! It would be so nice to have and I feel like I would get a lot of use out of one! However, my first attempt at making one of these didn't go great. I ended up making it too small! It could fit some containers, but not a pie dish like I was hoping, so for this post I ended up changing the size to be a few inches bigger so everything should fit!

I have so many cute fabrics I would love to use for this project, so I'll be making a few more of these in the coming weeks. This casserole dish carrier is a fairly simple project and can be easily finished in an afternoon.

Materials:

  • Two 22 x 22 inch pieces of fabric (one for the inside, one for the outside)

  • 22 x 22 inch piece of batting (you can also stitch smaller pieces of batting together like I did)

  • Two 4 x 6 inch pieces of fabric (for the inner loops)

  • 4.5 x 24 inch strip of fabric (for the strap)

  • Bias tape (color of your choice)

  • Clothes Iron

  • Basic sewing supplies

Instructions:

Pin one of your 22 x 22 inch pieces of fabric to the piece of batting (right-side of fabric facing outward). Flip to the other side of the batting, and pin on your other 22x22 inch piece (right-side of fabric facing outward). Quilt lines across the fabric. If you want, you can do fancy designs or crisscross lines, but I just chose basic quilting lines for this one.

After you've quilted this "batting sandwich" together, make sure all pins have been removed. Sew bias tape around the edges of the square. I did "mitered" corners for each corner of my bias tape. It's an easy technique to learn, and there are several tutorials through YouTube and TikTok. Once you've finished sewing on your bias tape, it's time to move on to the inner loops and strap of the project.

Fold the 4.5 x 24 strip of fabric in half lengthwise. Iron down, then open. For those that don't know, we are basically treating this like double fold bias tape. Fold down one side lengthwise, but don't go past the center crease you ironed earlier. Iron this one down, then repeat for the other side. Now fold everything in and iron well. Again, this should fold exactly like double-fold bias tape.

Sew each side of your strap to hold everything in place and give it more stability. Tuck in one of the ends of your strap (so the raw edge is hidden) and sew it to one of the corners on your quilted fabric square. Take the other end of your strap and repeat the process, this time sewing it to the opposite corner.

Take your two 4 x 6 inch pieces of fabric and fold/iron them down like bias tape, exactly the same way we just did for the strap. Sew each side of your loop strips to hold everything in place and give it more stability.

Tuck in one of the ends of one of the pieces (so the raw edge is hidden) and sew it to one of the corners on your quilted fabric square. Repeat on the other side of the fabric strip to create a loop. Repeat on last remaining corner of quilted piece with your last strip of fabric. Use picture below for reference to where everything should be.

That's it! Your casserole dish carrier is complete!
